Precision in Action: H. E. Services’ Komatsu PC210 Takes on Vital Viaduct Repairs in Ulverston

At H. E. Services (Plant Hire) Ltd, we’re proud to bring our expertise and advanced equipment to support critical repair work on the railway viaduct crossing the River Leven in Ulverston. Working alongside Network Rail, Story Contracting, and GPS Marine and Civil Services, we’ve deployed our high-spec Komatsu PC210 excavator to tackle the complex demands of this infrastructure project.

Our Komatsu PC210, a robust 22-tonne machine, is the perfect choice for this intricate work. It’s equipped with the Topcon MCMAX LPS system to meet the unique needs of this site. The viaduct itself is a vital link for the region, and we’re honoured to contribute to its longevity and resilience. The project is helping to fortify its piers and reinforce the concrete apron that provides essential scour protection.

Komatsu PC210 with Advanced Technology

We know that accuracy is everything on a project like this, which is why our Komatsu PC210 is fitted with the Topcon MCMAX LPS system. This advanced setup gives the operators precise control over every move, providing the level of accuracy and quality our clients expect from us.

Meeting the Challenges of a Unique Environment

This viaduct project comes with its own set of challenges due to the tidal environment of the River Leven. To adapt, our Komatsu PC210 is working from a liveaboard landing craft that’s moored just downstream from the viaduct apron. The vessel has a ramp allowing our excavator to move onto the apron when the tide is low. As the tide recedes, the operator skilfully manoeuvres the machine off the vessel and begins excavation work. They then return it safely to the craft at least an hour before the tide rises again.

This careful timing and execution are essential for maintaining safety. It also means that steady progress is made in the demanding conditions of the river’s ebb and flow.

Step-by-Step Project Execution

The work on the viaduct follows a methodical, phased approach to ensure each stage is completed to the highest standard:

  1. Preparing the Apron – The team begins by grading the apron bed, using broken concrete to create a stable, even surface for the installation of the grout mattresses that will protect the piers.

  2. Excavating the Trench – Once the bed is prepared, our excavator gets to work on trenching into the existing rock armour, using a specialised rock-handling grab to carefully reposition each rock. This precision work ensures that the trench is dug exactly according to design. This lays the groundwork for long-term stability.

  3. Replacing Rock Armour – After the grout mattresses are securely in place, they will carefully return the removed rock armour to its original position, filling the trench to protect the structure from future tidal erosion.
