H. E. Services (Plant Hire) Ltd Partners with Archaeologists for the V2 Westerham Project

We are thrilled to announce that H. E. Services (Plant Hire) Ltd will be collaborating once again with the archaeologists this September at a new V2 Rocket site location in Westerham, Kent. This partnership is part of the V2 Westerham Project, an exciting and historically significant archaeological endeavour.

The V2 Westerham Project

The project is focused on the excavation and detailed study of a V2 rocket impact site from World War II. The site, located at Westerham, has a rich historical context, marked by the tragic events of 11th March 1945. The rocket impact caused considerable damage, with recorded injuries and a fatality.

Breaking New Ground in Modern Archaeology: The V2 Rocket Site at Westerham

The V2 rocket was a technological marvel of its time. It continues to captivate historians, archaeologists, and the public alike. Our latest project at Westerham has unearthed not just the remnants of this powerful weapon but also the intricate story of its impact on the landscape and the people who experienced it.

The Science of Impact: Chalk, Clay, and Sand

One of the intriguing aspects of the V2 rocket impacts is the transformation of the surrounding materials. Historically, impacts in areas with chalk and clay have shown these materials being forced into their liquid forms due to the immense energy released during detonation. However, the Westerham site, characterised by its sandy soil, presents a unique question: Did the sand turn to glass under the extreme heat and pressure?

This aspect of our investigation adds a layer of scientific curiosity. It also pushes the boundaries of what we know about the effects of such powerful explosions on different types of soil.

Innovative Archaeological Methods at the V2 Rocket Site

Over the years, the archaeologists have refined the methodology for excavating rocket sites, ensuring meticulous recording of the study and precise location of finds. This project at Westerham is no different. The archaeological team has expanded to include eight members working in pairs. There will be four detecting and four digging. This structured approach ensures that while one team examines the initial excavation area, subsequent teams continue to process the material. This helps maintain a steady workflow and thorough analysis.

The Role of the Community and Landowner

The local community, represented by the landowner of Squerryes Court winery, has shown great interest in archeological excavation work in general. An open day might be held towards the end of the excavation, potentially offering a unique opportunity for public engagement. However, the timeline is fluid and depends on the progress of the findings.

Excavation Timeline

Day 1: Establish crater location using aerial imagery and historical resources. Define the trajectory with ranging poles and create shallow scrapes to reveal the crater profile. Set up exclusion zones and begin the first trench.

Day 2: Anticipate the first finds emerging. Extended team ready to search through the spoil.

Day 3: Major finds expected.

Day 4: Move towards completing the excavation and begin backfilling using various H. E. Services plant machinery.

Day 5: Reserved for any delays. Ensure the crater is backfilled, and the site is restored.

Why This Project Matters

Archaeological excavations like this provide invaluable insights into our past. It helps us to understand the historical significance of wartime events and their impact on local communities. The V2 rocket site in Westerham is particularly noteworthy, as it offers a unique opportunity to study the immediate and long-term effects of these powerful weapons.
