Site Safety

H.E. Services believe that a well informed customer is an essential in today’s environment. Site Safety is an issue that none of us can ignore and nor should we. Basic safety precautions when using excavators cost little or nothing, but not taking them can have dire consequences, such as :

Flooding your site, or leaving a live gas or electrical main which would disrupt you work.
Expensive repairs to services, which the utility provider can quite reasonably charge you for. (Fibre optic cable can cost £1/4 million if damaged!)
Consumers without water/gas/electricity/telephones for long periods of time.
Damaged machinery, incurring charges or insurance claims
In some instances, serious injury or loss of life.

All of the major utilities will provide free advice on locations of their services upon request. If you are unsure whether there are services on your site, make the call, you won’t regret it.

When fencing the areas of any excavation is impossible, excavations or holes should be covered or guarded.
All excavations of 1.2 metres deep or more, (or less if there is a significant risk of collapse), should be shored to prevent injury to workers entering the excavations.
Excavators should not be used within 0.5 metres of known underground power cables or other services.
Before working near overhead power cables, owners should be contacted to obtain advice on safe working practise as this varies.
If working excavators close to buildings, particular care must be taken to ensure that the buildings will not collapse.
Broken windows on excavators should be replaced immediately to protect the operator.
