New step frame trailer fleet enters operation with H.E. SERVICES

£500,000 worth of custom-built step frame trailers

Andover Trailers are delivering more than £500,000 worth of custom-built step frame trailers to H.E. SERVICES, the UK’s largest specialist excavator hire company. It marks one of the biggest trailer orders the Hampshire-based firm has secured this year – with the specialist new trailers manufactured exclusively at its two factories in Andover.

This latest order includes the first ever four-axle Andover step frame trailers to be built with SAF 11 tonne disc brake axles, which H.E. SERVICES’ Managing Director Peter Durey believes will alleviate issues experienced in the past with older-style drum brakes cracking during service.

In addition to bringing enhanced reliability, the disc brakes are expected to offer improved braking performance, coupled with simpler and faster maintenance, helping to further reduce downtime during trailer servicing.

Mr Durey explains: “We’ve had good service from the disc brakes on our smaller Andover step frames, so we asked the design team to incorporate them into the big new SFCL 67s. These larger trailers also feature new attached side extensions to the deck, bridge and beavertail, but aside from that, we’ve kept specifications very similar.”

“It says something about the quality of the Andover build when you can work the trailers as hard as we do for four years, and then have the confidence to put in a repeat order for an almost identical product,” Peter adds.

The order includes six SFCL 48 and two SFCL 53 tri-axle step frames, plus two larger four-axle SFCL 67 step frames – built with a low profile neck, beavertail and capable of operating at 48, 53 and 67 tonnes respectively (under STGO conditions). The six SFCL 48 models replace a fleet of smaller 40-tonne (SFCL 40) step frames; to give H.E. SERVICES increased capacity.

The trailers all feature SAF air-suspension with raise/lower control, hydraulic steady legs, top deck ramps, rugged trailer-mounted toolboxes, full LED lighting and multiple lashing points for maximum load security.

The smaller SFCL 48 step frames benefit from a lifting rear axle and fuel-saving 1m wide fold-forward ramps, with groucer bars to aid the loading of tracked machinery. The SFCL 53s have 1m wide by 2.5m long heavy duty single ramps, with hydraulic sideways controls, groucer bars on the beavertail plus a steering rear-axle for increased manoeuvrability. The range-topping SFCL 67s feature identical ramps and groucer bars, but with a self-tracking fourth axle and lifting front axle. All trailers are finished in distinctive French Blue paintwork, with silver and red conspicuity markings.

Ivan Collins, Sales Director of Andover Trailers, says: “We’re taking in10 used step frames as part- exchange against the new order, and it’s very satisfying to see how straight the frames are after four years of intensive work from H.E. SERVICES. It’s the ultimate conformation of how strong the four member frame construction we use is.”

The supply of new trailers follows delivery to H.E.SERVICES earlier this year of seven Andover plant bodies, each mounted to Daf 8×2 rigids. Together, the fleet will be used to support the delivery of more than 2,500 excavators from the company’s 12 depots throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

H.E. SERVICES ROLL WITH AMMANN

Saturday 4th August 2012 saw crowds of over 2000 as H.E.SERVICES celebrated their 40th anniversary at their Head Office in Strood. Kent.The whole event had an Olympic theme to coincide with the middle weekend of Great Britain hosting the 2012 Olympic games. Events, included many of the theme park rides from sister company, Diggerland which has 4 locations around the UK, including Kent, Leeds, Exeter and Durham. H.E. SERVICES’ very own record breaker ‘The Landshuttle’ started the day’s events by lighting the H.E. SERVICES’ Olympic flame and declaring the ceremony open.

There were many digger operator challenges and the most popular challenge was ‘The Champagne Challenge’, a competition which had everyone biting their finger nails as the prize for success was £1000 cash! The operators had to open a sealed box of champagne, remove a bottle, pop open the cork, and then pour 6 champagne flutes with champagne, all using a JCB 3CX! There were hundreds who attempted this challenge and one very skilled and lucky operator went home considerably richer than when he arrived! Other competitions included ‘The Aquatic Challenge’ where operators had to see how far into the water they could drive a Komatsu PC14 mini digger! The day also included many other jaw dropping attractions from ‘The Diggerland Dancing Diggers’ JCB stunt team to demonstrations of H.E. SERVICES’ latest machinery & attachments. The family orientated day was focused on allowing children and adults of all ages the chance to interact with a huge variety of H.E. SERVICES’ 2500 items of plant. Demonstrations also came from Masterhitch, famous for their market leading digger Quickhitch and ram guard systems as they shocked the crowds with a stunning display of ingenuity as their latest creation was unveiled. A separate display showed the impressive lifting capacity of a Komatsu PC450, coupled with the steady hand of a professional operator. 2012 is the 40th Anniversary of H.E. Services which started when Hugh Edeleanu purchased a second hand JCB 3C whilst completing an engineering degree at Cambridge University in 1972. Driving the digger earned Hugh extra cash. However Hugh soon realised the potential for selfdrive excavators and expanded his fleet, initially with wheeled excavators allowed by tracked machines. Whilst H.E. Services was growing year by year, Hugh’s innovative mind started to explore different ways in which the Company could complement the plant hire business.

In 1989 Hugh realised that he could offer great value to his customers, in the form of time saving, by fitting a quick-hitch system on excavators for changing buckets and other attachments. Hugh put his engineering skills to use and designed a quick-hitch system, which was far superior to others that were on the market. The hitch was fabricated in H.E. Services’ workshops and a company called Masterhitch was formed to build and market the hitch. Masterhitch soon diversified by building new buckets and designing new attachments and is also renowned for designing and building what is arguably the strongest ram guard on the market. In 1994 Masterhitch Europe was founded to market its products and develop innovations for the construction industry. Following the success of H.E. Services open days, Hugh was aware that children have a fascination with excavators and was keen to open an adventure park where children (and adults) can drive diggers and dumpers for fun. In the spring of 2000 the first Diggerland opened in Kent at the Strood site. Visitor numbers topped 50,000 in the first year of opening and in 2001 two more Diggerland sites opened, one in Durham and the other in Devon. Diggerland Yorkshire opened in the year of 2007. When Hugh purchased the second hand JCB 3C forty years ago not only was it was the beginning of H.E. Services (Plant Hire) Ltd, which is now the UK’s largest specialist excavator hire company, offering the very best of service from a dedicated workforce, it was also the start of many other business ventures.

H.E. SERVICES’ have taken delivery of three new 32 tonne DAF CF85 8×2 rigids, mounted with Andover Trailers plant bodies. A further four are currently under construction and will go into service shortly.

Peter Durey, Managing Director of H.E. SERVICES, says: “We’ve had a long-running relationship with Andover Trailers and they understand that we expect a product which is reliable and strong.

“You know that when you buy an Andover Trailers plant body, it is built to last. I have no doubt that with the quality of these trucks they could be easily in service for a decade – although at H.E. SERVICES we only keep them on our fleet for three years.

”The LPPB 32 body features fuel-saving hydraulic fold-forward ramps – a design pioneered by Andover Trailers. Measuring 2.7m by 1m wide, they fold flat against the deck – minimising aerodynamic drag while the truck is moving.

The specification also includes hydraulic steady legs, which ensure a stable platform for loading and unloading, as well as six pairs of lashing points in the floor to hold equipment down securely.All seven vehicles are equipped with red diesel tanks with hose and nozzle, which will be used to refuel H.E. SERVICES’ construction machinery on-site or on-the-move.

The DAF chassis have been provided by Channel Commercials, each finished in H.E. SERVICES’ distinctive orange and blue livery.H.E. SERVICES’ has also ordered six 48-tonne, two 53-tonne and two four-axle 67-tonne step frames from Andover Trailers – each specified with heavy-duty SAF disc brake axles.Peter Durey: “We have used drum brakes in the past and have had a few problems with them cracking which we wanted to avoid. Specifying these top quality SAF disc brakes made sense.”

H.E. Services digs deep with significant fleet investment.

Marubeni-Komatsu Ltd and H.E. Services (Plant Hire)Ltd, the largest specialist excavator hire company in the UK, have agreed a new £20m deal for the supply of over 300 new Komatsu crawler excavators during 2011.

This new package of machines, ranging from 2.5t to 45.0t operating weights, includes the PC26MR-3, PC55MR-3, PC80MR-3, PC130-8, PC210LC-8, PC350LC-8 and PC450LC-8. All machines are fitted with Komtrax, the Komatsu satellite machine monitoring system. Peter Durey (Managing Director at H.E. Services) said, “Komtrax is a powerful tooland we use it daily to help us manage and monitor our Komatsu fleet. The functionality in Komtrax was a big influence in our decision to choose Komatsu again as our major excavator supplier.”Further enhancing H.E. Services’ reputation and ability to supply a diverse range of machines, suitable for a wide variety of applications, a number of excavators will be supplied in super long front specification.

The PC130-8 Super Long Reach has a maximum digging reach of 12.3 metres and the PC350LC-8 Super Long Reach a maximum digging reach of 22 metres. This purchase is the latest of many and highlights the satisfaction that H.E. Services has in both the reliability of the Komatsu machines and the relationship they have built with Marubeni-Komatsu over the years. H.E. Services is undoubtedly the largest specialist excavator hire company in the UK and a growing presence in Europe undeniably makes them the market leader. H.E. Services offer all of their plant either on a self drive hire basis or with an experienced and qualified operator.

H.E.’ s geographically located depots all over the UK mean the company is able to provide a machine quickly which is of utmost importance in this fast paced industry. The company prides itself on a machine replacement policy of 2-3 years, ensuring only the latest models are available for hire. H.E. is also able to offer their customers a variety of attachments to fit their machines, all complete with Masterhitch/Quickhitch.
